The Educational Research Bureau supports faculty, students, and staff of the College of Education with pre-award activities primarily in the areas of funding searches and budget development for grant proposals. The Bureau also provides consultation and instructional support for research design.

| What are indirect (facilities and administrative [F&A]) costs? |
| Indirect costs are those costs not directly identified with a specific project or organizational activity. Indirect costs include costs include overhead costs (e.g., rent, utilities) and general and administrative expenses (e.g., officers' salaries, accounting costs, personnel department costs). | Are indirect [F&A] costs charged on the total direct costs of the project? |
| Indirect cost rates are based on Modified Total Direct Costs (MTDC), which are the total direct cost less equipment over $5000, patient care costs, participant support costs, alterations/renovations, rental of off-campus space and subcontract expenses in excess of $25,000, student stipends, and tuition. Multiply the MTDC by the appropriate indirect costs rate for the project. |
| If I am submitting a proposal to an external agency, when do I need to submit an application form to the Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects (IRB)? |

| The IRB application form must be submitted to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs no later than 30 days following the transmittal deadline for the proposal. Researchers are encouraged to submit the application form along with their research proposal when they bring it to the Educational Research Bureau (10 days before the transmittal deadline). |

| Proposal Development -- The Educational Research Bureau provides support for faculty during the process of acquiring external funding for research, instruction, and service by searching for funding opportunities and by aiding the preparation of funding proposals. Bureau staff help faculty prepare timelines for the proposal development process and aid in budget development, proposal preparation, and preparation of agency documentation. |

| Consulting Services -- Consulting services are available by appointment in the areas of program evaluation, survey form design, research design, qualitative research design, data management, choice of appropriate statistical tests, and statistical analysis. Graduate Research Assistants can provide introductory training with a variety of research-related software packages, including SPSS, SAS, LISREL, HLM, Atlas.ti, and NUD*IST. |
