Orthopedic Impairments

Orthopedic impairment is a special education category that refers to students who have physical (orthopedic) impairments that affects their educational performance to the degree that they require special education. This category includes a wide variety of impairments (e.g., cerebral palsy, spina bifida, spinal cord injuries, limb deficiencies, bone tuberculosis, burns causing contractures, muscular dystrophy). In Georgia, students served in a class for students with orthopedic impairments should be functioning no lower than criteria outlined for mild intellectual disabilities programs.
