Eligibility: Individuals eligible for the award are persons
who are minorities and persons with disabilities (as defined by
Georgia State's Office of Disability Services) applying for the
M.Ed. in Communications Disorders, or Ph.D. in Special Education.
Applicants must meet the entrance requirements of the College of
Education and the Department of Educational Psychology and Special
Education at Georgia State University for the Degree being pursued.
Applicants must be enrolled in both semesters of the academic year
and must make satisfactory progress toward meeting the degree requirements.
Amount of Scholarship: Applicants
pursuing the M.Ed. degree are eligible to receive $1500 for each
academic year for a period of two years. Applicants pursuing the
Ph.D. degree are eligible to receive $1500 for each academic year
for a period of two years. The scholarship money will be awarded
on a semester basis for each semester of the academic year (fall,
spring) beginning fall semester. For each semester, the award will
be contingent on the student continuing to meet the academic requirements
(grade point average, etc.) of the degree program. The number of
scholarships awarded will depend on the availability of funds.
Application Process: In addition
to the application materials for admission to the College, applicants
must submit the following to be considered for this scholarship:
Letters of Reference for the Scholarship:
Two letters of recommendation (at least one from a university or
college instructor) should be included with your application.
A statement which describes the applicant's planned course of study
and sources of income to support the plan (i.e., a list of courses
to be taken each semester, estimates of costs, and financial support
available to complete the degree).
Application Deadline: Completed
applications must be submitted to the Chair of the Department of
Educational Psychology and Special Education (EPSE) no later than
April 15th.
Award of Scholarship:
The scholarship decision will be made by May 1st for the following
academic year. The selection of individuals to receive this scholarship
will be made by a committee composed of three faculty members from
the EPSE Department with the Department Chair serving as an ad hoc
member. Membership on the committee will be by Department Chair
appointment for a period of two years. The committee will be responsible
for selecting individuals to receive the award and for monitoring
their progress toward degree completion (e.g., ensuring enrollment
each semester during the academic year, maintenance of grade point
average required for the degree program, etc.). Individuals applying
for this scholarship also may apply for graduate research assistantships
and/or other financial aide.
