Special Education

Eligibility
: Individuals eligible for the award are persons who are minorities and persons with disabilities (as defined by Georgia State's Office of Disability Services) applying for the M.Ed. in Communications Disorders, or Ph.D. in Special Education. Applicants must meet the entrance requirements of the College of Education and the Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education at Georgia State University for the Degree being pursued. Applicants must be enrolled in both semesters of the academic year and must make satisfactory progress toward meeting the degree requirements.

Amount of Scholarship: Applicants pursuing the M.Ed. degree are eligible to receive $1500 for each academic year for a period of two years. Applicants pursuing the Ph.D. degree are eligible to receive $1500 for each academic year for a period of two years. The scholarship money will be awarded on a semester basis for each semester of the academic year (fall, spring) beginning fall semester. For each semester, the award will be contingent on the student continuing to meet the academic requirements (grade point average, etc.) of the degree program. The number of scholarships awarded will depend on the availability of funds.

Application Process: In addition to the application materials for admission to the College, applicants must submit the following to be considered for this scholarship:

Letters of Reference for the Scholarship: Two letters of recommendation (at least one from a university or college instructor) should be included with your application.
A statement which describes the applicant's planned course of study and sources of income to support the plan (i.e., a list of courses to be taken each semester, estimates of costs, and financial support available to complete the degree).

Application Deadline: Completed applications must be submitted to the Chair of the Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education (EPSE) no later than April 15th.

Award of Scholarship: The scholarship decision will be made by May 1st for the following academic year. The selection of individuals to receive this scholarship will be made by a committee composed of three faculty members from the EPSE Department with the Department Chair serving as an ad hoc member. Membership on the committee will be by Department Chair appointment for a period of two years. The committee will be responsible for selecting individuals to receive the award and for monitoring their progress toward degree completion (e.g., ensuring enrollment each semester during the academic year, maintenance of grade point average required for the degree program, etc.). Individuals applying for this scholarship also may apply for graduate research assistantships and/or other financial aide.
