The Bureau for Students with
Multiple and Severe Disabilities

The Bureau houses the funded projects for the concentration in mental retardation of the Program in Multiple and Severe Disabilities. Currently the Bureau receives funds from the Georgia Department of Education, Division for Exceptional Students, to provide technical assistance and training institutes to teachers across the state (1986-present). Funds are also received to support the Center for Collaborative Education (1999-present), a component of the State Improvement Grant, to facilitate administrative strategies that support the placement of students with disabilities in Least Restrictive Placements; and "A Framework for Literacy for Students with Moderate and Severe Disabilities", a component of the State Improvement Grant for Personal Development.

Previously funded projects include: Personnel Preparation in Severe Handicaps (1976-1985, funded by OSERS); The Institute for teachers of students with severe/profound mental handicaps: Community-based instruction (1987-1990, funded by OSERS); Project TRACES: Technical Assistance in Deaf-blind Education, Southeast and Southcentral Regions (1984-1996, funded by OSERS); Project SAMS: Education of students with profound handicaps (1989-1992, funded by OSERS); Project SETS: Secondary education and transition services for students with severe disabilities (1988-1991, funded by OSERS); Project SETS Multi-district Outreach (1991-1994, funded by OSERS); Utilization of Best Practices in Transition (1995-1999, funded by OSERS); State Transition Institute (1995-1999, funded by GASEA & DHR); Statewide Systems Change Project for Education of Students with Severe Disabilities (1994-1999, funded by OSERS).
