Mission Statement
Our mission is to accelerate learning for
all Georgia Students.
What is Direct Instruction?
Direct Instruction (DI) is a model of teacher-directed
explicit instruction, which emphasizes the importance of how and
what a student is taught. The goal of DI is to accelerate student
learning by maximizing efficiency in the design and delivery of
instruction, thereby meeting the needs of a broad range of students.
Over the past three decades, research-based DII curricula have been
developed and revised for effective teaching of language, reading,
writing, spelling, mathematics, science, and social studies.
Where is DI in Georgia?
Direct Instruction is approved as a Comprehensive
School Reform Model for use in Georgia’s schools. Two DI reading
programs are approved for Georgia’s Reading First and Reading
Challenge initiatives. In addition, Georgia State is a site for
the National Institute of Child Health and Development’s Reading
Research Program, which is using DI reading programs in their research
efforts.
What is the Function of the Office of Direct Instruction?
The Office of Direct Instruction (ODI) is
an outreach center, whose primary function is to conduct research
on DI programs in Georgia. We also disseminate information to make
teachers and school systems aware of these effective programs. In
addition, office personnel provide training for teachers who want
to use Direct Instruction and offer technical support for schools
interested in implementing the programs school wide. Faculty and
staff have been working with local schools for the past five years,
teaching children how to read with the help of DI reading programs.
