The Center for the Study of Adult Literacy

"The term 'literacy' means an individual's ability to read, write, and speak in English, and compute and solve problems at levels of proficiency necessary to function on the job and in society, to achieve one's goals, and develop one's knowledge and potential." National Literacy Act, 1991

The mission of the Center is to conduct applied and basic adult literacy research and to provide technical assistance to the adult literacy community. Current ongoing projects in the Center include moderation of the Women and Literacy listserv (sponsored by the National Institute for Literacy) and an evaluation of local family literacy programs. The current research project focuses on effective instructional reading practices for adult learners. This project is a multiyear study funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) at the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute for Literacy (NIFL), and the Office of Adult and Vocational Education of the US Department of Education (OVAE).
