A U.S. Department of Education grant writtenby Ann Kruger has been approved, and will fund over 18,000 student contact hours of arts education over the next three years, focusing on low-income kindergarten students in Fulton County. The total amount funded will be $809,316 over three years, with a third being given each year. This is the first such award in the state and only the fourth in the Southeast since the grant – called Arts Education Model Development and Dissemination (AEMDD) – began. The Alliance Theatre will supply teaching artists as part of the grant structure. Fulton County Schools is a partner and Georgia State will conduct the research component, which will focus on whether a program in theatre can reduce the achievement gap that begins before children come to school – namely in language development.
