Gowen receives DOE award

Sheryl Gowen recently received an award from the Georgia Department of Education to evaluate the program effectiveness of the Georgia 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC). The evaluation will determine to what extent the program goals and objectives are achieved through evaluation design and program impact.

The 21st CCLC program was established through Title IV, Part B of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, as amended by the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001.

According to the DOE, the purpose of the Georgia 21st CCLC program is to provide federal funds to establish or expand community learning centers that operate during out-of-school hours.

The Georgia Department of Education says it has administered the 21st CCLC grant program from the U.S. Department of Education since 2002. It now serves approximately 18,000 children, providing homework assistance, mentoring, tutoring, and classes and clubs in sports, recreation, mathematics, chess, and dozens of other subjects.
