ECE receives Department of Education’s Transition to Teaching Program grant

10/3/2007

Congratulations to the Urban Accelerated Certification and Masters Program in the ECE Department on receiving a $1.9 million Department of Education’s Transition to Teaching Program grant. The grant entitled "Joining Urban School Partners in Building a Highly Qualified Future Workforce: Partnership Alternative Certification Teacher Pathways (PACT+)" is lead by the PI team of Diane Truscott, Nancy Jo Schafer, and Barbara Meyers.

The primary goal of the grant is to increase the number of highly qualified teachers committed to high-need schools. Project objectives and activities focus on four areas: recruitment and selection; training and certification; school partnership placements; and retention.

In addition to certification in K-5, teacher candidates will receive an ESOL endorsement during the non-degree certification year of the program. The PACT+ program works in partnership with the DeKalb County School System on targeted recruitment effort and developing a Professional Development School network exemplifying quality professional learning communities.

By the end of the proposed project, PACT+ will have impact upon 8,740 children and produce 135 newly certified teachers. The project also develops four PDS schools and involves approximately 60 university faculty and school mentor teachers and leaders.
