Bio

Dr. Schafer's research interest is in sociocultural approaches to teacher preparation and the development of reflective practice within a "Community of Learners" to improve teachers' pedagogy.  A primary teaching focus is on classroom management in urban settings.  Dr. Schafer has years of teaching experience (2nd-7th grade) in urban schools.  Prior to joining the faculty at Georgia State University, she was the Project Manager of the GenScope Assessment Project, which was funded by NSF to examine issues around assessment and motivation in high school genetics classrooms.  Dr. Schafer is also interested in the types of Student/Teacher discourse that improves students' mathematical ability.
