Bio

Dr. Smith’s professional experience includes teaching mathematics in public schools at all levels P-12 except K and over 12 years in mathematics teacher education at the college/university level in California, Utah, and Georgia . She has consulted with many schools and districts on a wide variety of issues involving the professional development of mathematics teachers.

Dr. Smith’s research interests include learning and teaching mathematics with understanding, children’s and teacher’s conceptions of mathematics, and teacher education and professional development. She has published in Teaching Children Mathematics, Educational Leadership, Journal of Mathematical Behavior, Curriculum Studies, Urban Education, and other journals and books . She is an active member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the Special Interest Group for Research in Mathematics Education (SIG/RME) of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).
