Bio
Dr. Fernandes Williams joined the Department of Early Childhood Education in 2005 after completing her doctoral studies at Emory University. She taught first grade for several years prior to becoming a teacher educator. She has also taught undergraduate and graduate courses on education and cultural diversity and American education and served as a supervisor for student teachers. Dr. Fernandes Williams works with teachers in the BSE program. Her primary focus is on the preparation of teachers for diverse populations. Her teaching, research and writing interests include the influence of race, culture, class, and other areas of diversity on teaching and learning. Her research focuses on the schooling of Black-White biracial students to understand how race is conceptualized among teachers, students, and parents when confronted with students who do not fit neatly into a single socially constructed category.
