<p class=3DMsoNormal>The General Education Assessment subcommittee of Commi=
ttee
on Academic Programs would like to propose that CAP take the next steps in =
the
process of creating a procedure for assessing the general education outcome=
s of
the core which will secure Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SA=
CS)
approval. These next steps will be to require all departments with courses =
in
the core curriculum to submit the following:</p>

eral
education learning outcomes on an annual basis, including how the results of
the assessment will be evaluated by the department and how goals for improv=
ing
student learning will be met.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'margin-left:.25in'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>This policy would take effect for the fall semester, 2=
006 in
order to provide sufficient data for SACS accreditation.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>The General Education Assessment subcommittee&#8217;s =
work
would consist of 1) reviewing the assessment plans; b) reviewing the annual
reports of each department; c) collating department reports that address the
same learning outcome; and d) reporting the results for each general educat=
ion
learning outcome to the relevant departments.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>The subcommittee has developed a number of effective
procedures and tools to assess the <st1:place w:st=3D"on"><st1:PlaceName w:=
st=3D"on">Georgia</st1:PlaceName>
 <st1:PlaceName w:st=3D"on">State</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st=3D"on=
">University</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>
general education learning outcomes and will make these available to depart=
ments
with courses in the core.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>The
members of the subcommittee would also serve as consultants to departments =
in
designing and evaluating assessments in the core.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>

share ideas about which assessment techniques have been effective and which
have not. </p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>Assessment of general education outcomes is required b=
oth by
the BOR and the SACS, and the General Education Assessment subcommittee of =
CAP has
been given the responsibility of conducting that assessment.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>Currently the nine subcommittee me=
mbers
are collecting and analyzing the data themselves, a process that is not only
time-consuming but also represents a top-down approach to assessment.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>The assessment effort would be more
effective and more likely to result in improved instruction in the core if =
it
were managed by the faculty in departments that actually teach core curricu=
lum
courses. The subcommittee&#8217;s task would be to review the plans and res=
ults
and make recommendations.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>This
proposal would accomplish both those goals. </p>
