Department of Middle/Secondary Education and Instructional Technology
Georgia State University
Mission Statement
The Department of Middle/Secondary Education and Instructional Technology is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service, and to developing and maintaining exemplary programs in middle and secondary education and instructional technology. Consistent with the mission of Georgia State University and the College of Education, our particular focus is on the urban environment and on the preparation and support of outstanding educators. The department’s teaching mission is to provide the atmosphere and the instruction to enable prospective and practicing educators (a) to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for effective work in the wide range of educational environments they represent and (b) to become lifelong learners across the length of their professional careers. Our research mission, closely tied to our teaching, is to inquire into the teaching and learning processes in our various disciplines, to interpret and communicate research findings, and to develop the educational designs, programs, and materials that the research implies. The department is committed to providing service to the educational community whenever and wherever possible, supporting the work of school systems in the Atlanta metropolitan area and elsewhere, assisting the efforts of professional organizations locally, nationally, and internationally, and responding to other needs that may arise.
