The Georgia State University program in Sport Administration is one of only 27 accredited master’s degree programs in the country. It is designed to prepare students for careers in sport business. Colleges and universities, sport apparel manufacturers, sport arenas, sport marketing firms, athletic clubs, professional sport teams, and high schools are among the many organizations and enterprises that require highly trained personnel.
The
roles and functions of administration of sports programs in educational,
commercial, and professional settings are analyzed.
Students study budgetary theory and the process of planning as they relate to recreation and sports administration.
Students
study the policies, procedures, and processes of management, organization, and
administration as they apply to interscholastic, intercollegiate, or
professional athletic programs.
Prerequisite:
KH 6560 or consent of instructor.
Students
receive an overview of techniques and strategies of revenue producing
activities in sports. Emphasis is placed on developing a balanced, multifaceted
program of fund-raising and planned giving.
Students
study the role and significance of sports in contemporary society. Emphasis is
placed on issues which affect the athlete, coach, administrator, and the sports
fan.
Students study the planning, design, equipment, maintenance, and utilization of physical education, athletic, fitness, and recreational facilities.
Prerequisite:
one course in marketing.
Students
apply the principles of marketing and promotion to collegiate, professional,
and recreational sports marketing.
Students
apply law to selected aspects of education, commercial, and professional
sports.
Prerequisite:
consent of faculty adviser and consent of instructor.
Students receive practical administrative experience in a selected sport
setting. Internship may extend beyond one term.

3: Content Area- Socio-Cultural Context of Sport
Premise: The insightful sport manager will understand people who engage in sport within their respective living environments, thus comprehending their interest and values for sport participation and/or their sport spectator interest. Cultural influences on sport, from the social milieu, from social behaviors of the past, and for projection in the future, may be recognized through inquiry, quantitative analysis, and future prospects of how much socio-cultural phenomena as historical influences, philosophical ethos, economic volatility, political pressures, the legal system, education, and ethical dilemmas are revealed through sport and from sport participants.
