Major-Specific Outcomes in the DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION—FILM, JOURNALISM, SPEECH AND THEATRE
I Learning Outcomes and Assessment Methods for the General
Education Outcomes for Department of Communication Core Curriculum Courses. Students
in general education core courses will be assessed for goal accomplishments
through the course embedded method. All Department of Communication core
curriculum courses have enrollments limits of 120 students. Two sections of
each course will be assessed either during the fall ’04 or spring ’05 semesters
(schedule below). Results of the assessments will provide the degree to which
goals have been met, and will be shared with the faculty the semester following
the actual assessment. Assessment results will be used to evaluate course
content in order to improve student performance in goals where improvement is
indicated.

Major Goals/Learning Outcome:
Learning Outcomes—for the Undergraduate Film and Video
Major and Assessment Plan for the Film and Video Major—Goals 2, 3 and 6 will be assessed during fall’04 and
spring ’05 semesters, using the pre- and post-test method. The film faculty
will use a set of questions to gauge student performance on three of the six
goals (goals 1, 4 and 5 will be assessed during the fall ’05 and spring ’06
semesters. (The assessment plan for these three goals will be completed by fall
‘04). There are four questions for each of the three goals. Instructors in each
of the relevant courses will collect student writing from multiple short papers
or a single term paper and a faculty committee will evaluate the quality of the
student work based on a five-point scale. The pre-test will be administered to
students in the Film 1010 Aesthetics and Analysis course, and the post test in
Film 4750 Film Theory and Criticism course, an introductory and advance course
respectively. Results of the assessments will provide the degree to which goals
have been met, and will be shared with the faculty the semester following the
actual assessment. Assessment results will be used to evaluate course content and/or
curriculum in order to improve student performance in goals where improvement
is indicated.

Learning Outcomes for the Undergraduate
Journalism
Major and Assessment Plan for the Journalism Major—Goals 3 and 4 will be assessed during fall ’04 and spring
’05 Semesters, using a pre- and post-test method. A survey form and 20 question
objective pre-test will be given to all students in Jour 1000 Introduction to
Mass Communication. Two separate 10 question objective post-tests will be give to students in Jour 3060 and Jour 3070 respectively.
The survey will gather information on age, gender, year in school, total
credits taken to date, when and where they took Jour 1000, ethnicity, major,
minor, and GPA. The test will be completed on Opscan
forms, and the data will be saved in an ASCII format and imported into SPSS for
analysis. Reliability and validity will be made on test items, and scores from
the pre-test in Jour 1000 will be compared to scores from the post-tests in
Jour 3060 and 3070. We will use the demographic data to describe our
population, and to help us understand how we might improve the curriculum to
better achieve our goals and serve our students. Journalism faculty teaching
the Jour 1000, 3060 and 3070 courses will grade the pre- and post-tests.
Goals 1 and 2 will be assessed
during fall ’05 and spring ’06, using the course embedded method for goal 1 and
a writing project for goal 2 containing elements tested on a five-point scale.
The writing project will be required by all students in upper-level writing
courses. Results of the assessments will provide the degree to which goals have
been met, and will be shared with the faculty the semester following the actual
assessment. Assessment results will be used to evaluate course content and/or
curriculum in order to improve student performance in goals where improvement
is indicated.

Learning Outcomes for the Undergraduate Speech Major
and Assessment Plan for the Speech Major—Goals 1, 2 and 3 will be assessed during the fall ’04 and fall’05
semesters using the pre- and post-test method. This test will have many
multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, and other
objective-type questions; results will be graded by Dr. Jaye
Atkinson. All questions arise from four areas and these include:
1) Models of communication.
2) Theoretical concepts in:
a. Public/political communication
b. Interpersonal communication
c. Communication, language and
development
3)
How communication varies based on age, gender, culture and disability.
4)
The steps and resources used to write a research paper.
This pre-test/post-test will
cover aspects of all 3 goals for the major; it will be posted on a WebCT course
page so that students may take the exam on their own time (not during class
time). Demographic data, such as year in school, will also be collected to be
sure students are either entering or exiting the program. Results of the
assessments will provide the degree to which goals have been met, and will be
shared with the faculty the semester following the actual assessment.
Assessment results will be used to evaluate course content in order to improve
student performance in goals where improvement is indicated.

Theatre Major
and Assessment Plan for the Theatre Major—Goal 3 will be tested during the fall ’04 and spring ’05 semesters using
the pre- and post-test method, in each semester respectively. Goals 1 and 2
will be tested during the fall ’05 and spring ’06 semesters, again with the
pre- and post-test method. For Goal 3, the pre-test will consist of Acting I students preparing and performing a monologue. The
post-test will consist of Senior Collaborative Seminar students performing
original work written, directed and acted by them in a collaborative setting.
The theatre faculty will observe and grade the Acting I monologues and the
Senior Collaborative Seminar performances. Results of the assessments will
provide the degree to which goals have been met, and will be shared with the
faculty the semester following the actual assessment. Assessment results will
be used to evaluate course content in order to improve student performance in
goals where improvement is indicated.
