Major Areas of Interest

My research and teaching interests focus on improving educational outcomes for children who struggle to acquire language and literacy skills, in particular children at-risk for and diagnosed with developing learning disabilities and chidlren from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Current research interests include: (1) investigating relations between dialect variation and language and literacy skill acquisition, development, and performance; (2) examining learning processes in children and adults with reading disabilities; (3) exploring the utility of early lliteracy screening in preschool for preventing learning difficulties; and (4) evaluating professional development for language and literacy instruction in preschool, kindergarten, and first grade.
