Major Areas of Interest
Dr. Heller has coordinated the orthopedic impairment program at GSU since 1992. She brings to the program a strong background in orthopedic impairments and is nationally known for her work in this field. Dr. Heller is certified in the areas of Orthopedic Impairments, Visual Impairments, and Mental Retardation and is a licensed registered nurse. One of her primary research interest is providing effective educational instruction and health care for students with physical, sensory, and health impairments. She also has a strong interest in assistive technology and created the Assisitive Technology concentration in the department’s Ed.S. program.
Since the posting of this website (2003), Dr. Heller has written 3 books, over 10 book chapters, over 25 articles, and numerous monographs. She has had over 15 grants and currently directs the Georgia Deafblind Project and the Bureau for Students with Physical and Health Impairments. She has also served on over 50 committees (e.g., chair of the National Critical Issues and Leadership Committee in Physical and Health Disabilities). Dr. Heller is currently conducting research in literacy for students with severe speech and physical impairments and is also investigating issues regarding specialized health care procedures in the schools.
