Research Wednesdays Presentation: Arts-based Instruction Enhances Literacy: A Partnership of The Alliance Theatre, the College of Education and Fulton County Schools
Presenters: Ann Kruger and Teri Holbrook
Ann Kruger is a developmental psychologist whose research investigates the functions of discourse, relationships and thought in the development of cultural knowledge. She recently completed seven years of federally-funded research investigating changes in language development and academic achievement in children who experience teaching that integrates drama into the language arts curriculum. Kruger also directs Project PREVENT, an intervention to promote the psychological health of Atlanta school children most at risk of commercial sexual exploitation.
Teri Holbrook, an assistant professor of literacy and language arts in the Department of Early Childhood Education, looks at how arts-infused and digital composition alters notions of literacy education, academic and literary writing, and qualitative inquiry. Her academic articles have been published in Qualitative Inquiry, Visual Arts Research, Children’s Literature in Education, The Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, and the Literacy Research Association Yearbook. She is co-editor of Language Arts, a premiere journal by the National Council of Teachers of English.
