Locomotor Differences Between Floor-to-Stair Transition Steps
by Toyin Ajisafe

Falls have been widely associated with floor-to-stair transition (FST). Although, studies have combined the first and second FST steps (TS1 & TS2) as one stride, however, these steps differ in the magnitude of foot vertical and forward displacements. Also, unlike TS2, there is no cutaneous feedback from the stair surface to the foot prior to completing TS1. Since variability of the minimum vertical distance between the foot and walking surface during swing could potentially result in a trip, this study aimed to elucidate toe marker spatiotemporal differences between TS1, TS2, and SS1 (first steady-state step) and how these might correlate with specific lower extremity joint powers when transitioning onto stairs of different heights with and without ankle load.
