The Georgia Bureau for Students with Physical and Health Impairments
provides a variety of services to assist educators and parents in the area of
literacy for students with orthopedic impairments.
TRAINING
There are four types of training activities offered
by the Bureau:
1) STATEWIDE TRAINING WORKSHOP SERIES. The Bureau for Students with Physical and Health Impairments provides a series of statewide workshops each year on reading and writing strategies for students with orthopedic impairments. These workshops occur throughout the state of Georgia and target teachers of students with orthopedic impairments (although other service providers and parents are welcome to attend). The three day workshop series is constructed so that the teacher will have time to implement the material between each workshop and receive on-site support as needed. Please look at our training calendar for when training is scheduled. (If you would like to request a workshop series in your area, please contact us). PLU (SDU) credit will be available.
2) ON-SITE TRAINING SERIES. Teachers certified in orthopedic impairments (physical and health disabilities) who have a student with severe speech and physical impairments that would like to receive on-site support in literacy instruction, may request an on-site series. An on-site series consists of 4 to 5 on-site visits by Bureau staff in which the teacher is provided instruction on literacy strategies that can be used with the specific student. Assignments are given that need to be completed between visits to promote reading or writing with the student. 1 PLU (SDU) credit is available for participating teachers. (Please note- We are currently getting approval for the PLU (SDU) credit). Please fill out the ON-SITE Technical Assistance Request Form (click on name) and indicate you want the on-site training series under "Target Areas".
3) ON-SITE CONSULTATION. Teachers who would like Bureau staff to give on-site technical assistance on literacy to their students with orthopedic impairments may request Bureau staff to come to their location to provide on-site consultation. Bureau staff will make recommendations and provide follow-up to the visit. Please fill out the ON-SITE Technical Assistance Request Form (click on name).
4) OTHER TRAINING OPTIONS. Additional training options (e.g., local workshop with follow-up) and technical assistance options (e.g., phone consultations, referrals, e-mail consultations) are available by request.
