Strategies for Promoting Literacy for Students with
Orthopedic Impairments – Southwest GLRS Albany

This two day institute (with a follow-up half day) is designed to provide teachers and related service staff with the most up-to-date information on reading and writing strategies for students with orthopedic impairments, including those with severe speech impairments. This presentation is free of charge and is sponsored by the Georgia Bureau for Students with Physical and Health Impairments (http://education.gsu.edu/physicaldis) which is part of the State Improvement Grant. Dr. Kathy Heller, professor in Physical and Health Disabilities at Ga. State University, will be the featured presenter along with Peter Mezei and Mari Beth Coleman-Martin.
August 28 and 29, 2006 from 9:00 to 3:30 p.m. The first day will focus on teaching decoding skills, word identification, and adaptations for students with physical disabilities. Special emphasis will be given to teaching decoding skills to students with severe speech and physical impairments (including AAC users). The second day will focus on fluency, comprehension, and assessment of literacy skills. Participants will receive a Literacy Monograph with a CD.
September 18, 2006 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. This half day follow-up session will provide participants an opportunity to discuss their use of the literacy strategies presented during the 2 day Institute in August. In addition, there will be information on writing adaptations and strategies. Participants who attend all sessions of the Institute and who have completed a short assignment (of their choice) will receive 1 PLU credit at the end of this session.
