

The mission of the Musculoskeletal Injury Research Laboratory is to investigate and disseminate current, relevant information regarding the examination, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries.
The lab is a 1200 sq foot facility with several computer workstations, teaching space and equipment, and a variety of equipment. The primary research focus is to examine the risk factors and other variables associated with physical activity-related injury and to determine the appropriateness and efficacy of treatment, management and rehabilitation approaches for these injuries. Research questions are answered using isokinetic strength evaluation (Kin-Com 500H dynamometer), EMG analysis, plantar pressure assessment (2 EMED Pedar systems), and other technologies available for biomechanical analysis, pain assessment, postural evaluation, and balance assessment.
Current, ongoing research projects include the evaluation of the efficacy of custom-fabricated orthotics via the use of plantar pressure assessment, and the efficacy of custom-fabricated orthotics in pain management, posture, and improved balance. New projects are also examining the impact of muscle damage on plantar pressures, muscle strength, and EMG activity.
