KH Department is excited to be a part of a new initiative to help improve the quality of life for young individuals. The KH Department has two outstanding biomechanics professors who are creating a new Center for Pediatric Locomotion Sciences to help them advance their research. Dr. Jianhua "Jerry" Wu has done a series of studies to show the benefit of treadmill walking in children with Down Syndrome. His work has demonstrated a positive impact on motor development with early and effective locomotion intervention. Dr. Mark Geil's most recent work has been with idiopathic toe walkers. He and his doctoral student, Hsinchen Fanchiang, have recently patented an orthotic device that will help these individuals develop a normal gait pattern. We know that mobility is an important part of a child's development. The Center will be an important vehicle for obtaining money to support pediatric locomotion research.
