The Department of Kinesiology and Health hosted the National Association for Kinesiology and Physical Education in Higher Education’s (NAKPEHE) second annual Leader Development Workshop, bringing together veteran and novice leaders in the field to learn from one another’s experiences.
The workshop, which took place July 7-9, brought senior and aspiring leaders in kinesiology and physical education to Georgia State University to discuss the issues they face in their profession and offer suggestions for improvement.
“The senior leaders have the chance to share their wisdom with this group, and the new leaders share their concerns and bring a new perspective to the field,” said Jacalyn Lund, KH department chair. “This also presents a good networking opportunity and a way for us to connect with each other during the year.”
This year’s workshop focused on three major areas – working with intercollegiate athletes, raising revenue and women in leadership – and provided a forum for attendees to develop new programs and partnerships.
“We take notes on all of our discussions and disseminate them to our members, and oftentimes our conversations result in new projects,” said Steve Estes, chair of the Health and Human Performance Department at Middle Tennessee State University, who helped moderate the workshop. “For example, we’re offering a mentorship program for women leaders to help them acquire and improve their leadership skills so they can find leadership positions in the future.”
NAKPEHE is a national organization of professionals in higher education who “foster leadership in teaching, administration, policy, preparation for the professions and scholarship,” according to its website.
