Enrolling in a CPS graduate-level course

In rare cases, a non-CPS student may enroll in a CPS graduate level course. Usually these cases involve a certified or licensed mental health or education professional needing one course for a specific professional reason. Proof of professional need may be required. Permission to enroll in a CPS graduate-level course is granted on a case by case basis. Please click on the appropriate link for more information.

Non-Degree seeking student wanting to enroll in a CPS graduate-level course

Mental health or education professionals hoping to enter GSU and enroll in a graduate-level course (such as CPS 6410 or CPS 8400) must complete the following steps:

1) You must complete a Graduate Application to the College of Education's "Mental Health Counseling, Nondegree" program by the listed deadline. Please note that all application materials listed (including GRE scores, official transcripts, letters of recommendation, etc. ) are required. Do not forget to include the list of courses you are hoping to take (such as CPS 6410, CPS 8400, etc.). For a stronger application, please include copies of any professional licenses(LPC, LP etc.) certifications or professional credentials. Also note that you are subject to all the rules and policies that govern the nondegree student in the College of Education. These are detailed in the current graduate catalog.

2) The CPS department will be given the opportunity to consider your application (and request for a seat in your desired course) and other submitted materials once The Office of Academic Assistance and Graduate Admissions (OAA) determines that your application is complete and you meet the minimum qualifications for nondegree status. Notification of the application decision can come (and usually does come) as late as one week prior to the course start date or during the first week of classes, simply because we must give all our degree seeking student first priority registration. Late registration fees may apply, and the non-CPS student will be responsible for these fees.  Please be flexible and patient. Notification is usually sent by e-mail.

If you are accepted as a nondegree student for your desired course, but cannot accept the seat open to you at that time (due to a schedule change, etc.), we will assist you in asking OAA to postpone your admission application until the next section of your desired course is offered--your application (and seat request) will be reevaluated at that time.  Previously admitted students are not guaranteed admission into the next term. Additional application fees may apply at that time.

The date course offerings are posted to the website, and the full semester meeting dates are available here.

Transient student wanting to enroll in a CPS graduate-level course

Graduate Transient Student (request to be a visiting student)

A student in good standing at another college or university may be able to take classes in the College of Education as a temporary or visiting student, pending the approval of both the College of Education and the CPS department. In addition to the transient student application, a student usually must also present documentation of being in good standing at the home institution. Also, the CPS department requires an official, sealed transcript to accompany the transient application.  The transcript should be from the student's current graduate program.  Download the COE Graduate Transient Application (PDF)

The CPS department will be given the opportunity to consider your transient application (and request for a seat in your desired CPS graduate course) and other submitted materials once The Office of Academic Assistance and Graduate Admissions (OAA) determines that your application is complete and you meet the minimum qualifications for transient students status.  For a stronger application, have your home institution program director or chair write a letter confirming your program's accreditation, as well as confirmation of you needing this specific course.  If there are multiple sections/offerings of your desired course, please specify which section is your first choice. Notification of the application decision can come (and usually does come) as late as one week prior to the course start date, or during the first week of classes, simply because we must give all our degree seeking student first priority registration. Late registration fees may apply, and the non-CPS student will be responsible for these fees. Please be flexible and patient. Notification is usually sent by e-mail.  Please note that transient students MUST meet the prerequisite and/or corequisites listed for their desired course, and show proof of doing so from their home university.  Transient applications are rarely accepted for skills, practicum and/or internship courses.  Transient students needing these courses should have a faculty member at your home institution reach out on your behalf to the CPS department faculty well in advance.  Internship courses and placements are usually arranged around 4 months in advance in CPS, well before the transient application deadline.

If you are accepted as a nondegree transient student for your desired CPS graduate course, but cannot accept the seat open to you at that time (due to a schedule change, etc.), we will assist you in asking OAA to postpone your transient student application until the next section of your desired CPS graduate course is offered--your application (and seat request) will be reevaluated at that time.  Previously admitted students are not guaranteed admission into the next term. Additional application fees may apply at that time.

The date course offerings are posted to the website, and the full semester meeting dates are available here.

A Georgia State University graduate student wanting to enroll in a CPS graduate-level course

A Georgia State University graduate student currently enrolled and attending courses in a graduate program outside of the CPS department may be eligible to take CPS 6410, some CPS 7000-level courses, some CPS 8000-level courses, and a very limited number of CPS 9000-level courses.

CPS 6000-level courses (with the exception of some limited sections of  CPS 6410) and CPS 9000-level courses are reserved for degree-seeking students only, and enrollment of non-CPS students in these courses is rare.

Students MUST meet the prerequisite and/or corequisites listed for their desired course. Students should consult the current graduate catalog for a listing of CPS courses that includes their respective prerequisites and corequisites.

A Georgia State University graduate student currently enrolled and attending courses in a graduate program outside of the CPS department, but wishing to take a graduate-level course in the CPS department should follow the steps detailed below:

  1. Please submit a course authorization form to the department.
  2. Please e-mail the instructor of record listed for the course on the PAWS (or GoSOLAR) course listing. Instructor e-mail addresses can be found here. If the course is listed as "staff," only CPS students may enroll. Let the instructor know that he/she should soon be receiving a course authorization form from you, allowing you to enter his/her course. The instructor may ask for further information about your desire and qualifications to enter the course. For a stronger request, please include copies of any professional licenses (LPC, LP, etc.), certifications, or professional credentials.
  3. The instructor must agree to the non-CPS student being added to the course. Permission to register for the course may ONLY be granted by the instructor of the course. Permission to register for a course is usually given to non-CPS students one week prior to classes OR during the first week of classes to allow CPS degree-seeking students registration priority. Late registration fees may apply, and the non-CPS student will be responsible for these fees.
  4. Once the instructor has granted permission, the instructor will have his/her CPS staff member place the authorization on the non-CPS student's account. If the non-CPS student still has trouble registering for the course, the student should follow-up with the instructor.

Students are subject to all the terms and policies listed in the graduate catalog.
