10 Year Anniversary with ECEE Student Teaching in China
Dr. Yali Zhao sent us the following update on April 12 about her spring student teaching study abroad program in China. Please enjoy her report!
Dear ECEE family,
Hope you are doing well!
We (me and ten students) left Atlanta on a Saturday afternoon on April 9. We arrived safe and sound in Chengdu on Monday April 11. Once we arrived, ten teachers/leaders greeted us with bouquets of flowers for each of us!
And since we’ve been here, we are experiencing happy surprises one after another. They gave us a welcome lunch filled with performances. In the welcome ceremony we enjoyed:
- A Chinese martial arts performance
- Lion dances
- Music from an ancient instrument called a Guzheng, and many more things.
We toured a students’ robots and science lab. We observed English lessons by Chinese teachers at different grade levels. We watched teachers of all subjects do fun games. They have given us so many big and small gifts! Look at the beautiful, giant panda in our hands and these terrific photos of our students on the large wall! All like superstars!
In these next few weeks, we’ll observe and teach classes at five sites. The sites are university affiliated schools from 1st-8th grade. We’ll conduct four public teaching demonstrations and seminars with Chinese teachers. We’ll attend college classes, watch Chinese martial arts, paint and do calligraphy. We’ll enjoy music classes and traditional sports meetings.
Overjoyed and impressed describes how our students feel! The generosity and friendliness of our Chinese colleagues and host families is wonderful.
Ten years ago, I brought ten student teachers to Chengdu. This was my first China study abroad program. Here we are ten years later! We are celebrating ten years of collaborations and friendships. And with the same number of students that came to Chengdu as ten years ago!
It’s so wonderful to witness the growth of our relationship over the decade.
Our team in China sends their greetings to you. They welcome you to visit Chengdu, China in the future!
Best wishes to you all!
